This is my 998cc mini engine bay. Mods are pertronix ignition replacing the points and a fuel filter befor ethe single HS4 carb in the back. It has been on jackstands for a year with a rag in the carb inlet and, then, fresh oil. I was taking the brakes completely apart to restore them and found them amazingly rusty. I got into cycling, and winter, and family. I did manage to get the gas tank removed and completely refurbished with a nice job of POR-15 tank treatment plus paint and a new gas level thingamabob in it before leaving it alone.
I have been planning. Today, with the winter weather in the mountains, rain threatening, I thought I should run it a bit before totally taking it apart for the body rotisserie work I have been planning. I put the tank in, hooked it up and poured in a gallon of fresh gas. It took a while for the gas to flow to the engine. In fact, I did use a brake bleeder suction device on the end of the fuel line to draw the gas up until at least i could see it in that filter to the left of the Carb in that picture. Putting it back on and tightening the clamps, it cranked over and chugged once. Choke on full wasn't enough so i just put my hand in front of the carb inlet and cranked.
Runs.
Like a smooth freshly oiled sewing machine. Purrs right along. Revs up fine and sounds just like the anemic 34 horsepower engine it's supposed to be. what I do know is that it's at 5200 feet elevation, and cylinder 1 is running at about 6:1 compression where the others are at 8. It's always had that.
So now I run it a little more on another day, then change out the year old hardly used oil for something more fresh and then take the sucker apart.
I have this to fix.
entire floor, sections of door sills, some A pieces. the rest is in perfect shape wiht a horrible paint job. I hope within the next year I can have it ready for it's origional Vermillion red all over. (red with a touch of orange)
Just twenty minutes in the garage was some nice therapy today. Now for a lunch of last night's chilli and cornbread.
